Hello Roël,
Can you remember that back-to-school feeling, when you were getting ready for a new school year? I would get very excited about choosing a new pencil case, planner, highlighters and various bits of stationary. It was such a great feeling of a fresh start.
Have you ever considered how you could tap into that fresh-start energy and apply it to other areas of your life, like your health? A clear-out, buying a few helpful tools, or organising the ones you have can create the energy you need to make things happen.
What I talk about in my weekly vlog
In this week's video I explain how you can create 'back-to-school' vibes and apply them to inject new energy into a healthy lifestyle. You can find it here.
What I've been reading
Gary Taubes’ Why We Get Fat is a compelling, science-backed look at one of the most common health struggles of our time. In this thought-provoking book, Taubes challenges the widely accepted “eat less, move more” narrative and instead explores how hormones, particularly insulin. play a central role in fat storage and weight gain.
Written in a clear, accessible style, this book makes complex nutritional science easy to understand, without dumbing it down. Taubes presents evidence that not all calories are equal, and that our modern high-carbohydrate diets may be driving obesity and metabolic disease. He explains why low-fat advice hasn’t delivered the results promised and offers a different approach centred around reducing refined carbs and sugar.
Whether you're trying to lose weight, support metabolic health, or simply want a deeper understanding of how your body works, I highly recommend this book. It's eye-opening, empowering, and may completely change the way you think about food and health.
What I've been eating
Fresh figs are in season now, and they’re a delicious way to nourish your body. Soft, sweet, and full of flavour, figs are rich in fibre, which supports digestion and helps keep you feeling full. They also contain natural sugars, making them a healthier option when you’re craving something sweet.
Figs are a good source of potassium, which supports healthy blood pressure, and they provide calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants, which contribute to bone health and help protect your cells from damage. They have a low to moderate glycaemic index, so they’re less likely to cause big spikes in blood sugar compared to many processed snacks.
Serving suggestion: Slice fresh figs and pair with Greek yoghurt, a drizzle of honey, and crushed walnuts for a simple, nutritious breakfast or dessert. They’re also lovely in salads, try them with rocket, goat’s cheese, and toasted seeds for a sweet-savoury twist.
Essential oil I've been using
Essential oils can be a safe, natural way to support your garden without resorting to harsh chemicals. Many oils have insect-repelling properties, making them useful for keeping pests like aphids, ants, and caterpillars at bay. They can also deter fungal growth and even help attract pollinators when used carefully.
Peppermint, rosemary, clove, citronella, and lavender oils are particularly effective in the garden. They work by masking the scent of plants or irritating insects’ sensory receptors.
DIY Natural Pest Repellent Spray:
– 500ml water
– 1 tablespoon mild liquid soap (like castile soap)
– 10 drops peppermint essential oil
– 10 drops rosemary essential oil
– 5 drops clove essential oil
Mix well in a spray bottle and shake before each use. Spray directly on affected leaves (top and underside), avoiding the hottest part of the day. Use weekly or after rain to keep pests away and protect your plants naturally.
To get all the benefits and ensure safety, it is very important to use the highest quality (certified therapeutic grade) of essential oils. Let me know if you need help choosing your oils, or advice on which oils to use.
